The First Cemetery of Athens – haven’t made it past the first yet. For now without many comments on the pictures.

I have loved Athens long enough to stop seeing it as a collection of sights. I return for the light, the noise, the smells (yes, really), the disorder, the souvlakia at O Thanasis, and the peculiar sense that every surface has accumulated more history than it can comfortably hold. Yet, for all the photographs I have taken here, I somehow kept walking past its street art. It took me long enough to stop and give it the attention it deserved, even if this is but a very thin slice of what’s there. This is on purpose – this way, I can sell “Need to take more pictures of street art” as a reason to disappear there for a week or several.

This is the story of five photographs from Highgate Cemetery.

The frame is a lie, and knowing this is the beginning of photography.

February to June 2020. When you live somewhere long enough, you start filling memory card upon memory card with pictures, dump them on your hard drive, and then forget about them.

Abandoned places, primarily in Greece. Εγκατάλειψη is the Greek word for dereliction.

Over Pentecost 2020 I took a trip up to Thessaly, mostly to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora. I also went to visit Ropoto, because I couldn’t pass up a reportedly abandoned village in the vicinity.

A two-day private tour of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in September 2018, including a visit inside the ChNPP power plant itself, the control rooms, Pripyat and a stopover at Tunya’s village.

Mainly photos shot from a DJI Spark. Many are panoramic views composed of 5 to more than 50 individual pictures.

A one-day trip into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in May 2017, from the dead villages, the Duga-3 radar and Kopachi to the sarcophagus of reactor No. 4 and the empty streets of Pripyat.
