Acrylic

 

Acrylic (known to its friends as PMMA, Poly[methyl methacrylate], Plexiglass, Perspex and so on) is widely used as shatter-resistant alternative to glass. Acrylic comes in two varieties: cast and extruded - both versions have advantages and disadvantages depending on the intended use. Cast acrylic engraves white with good contrast, while extruded is generally more consistent in thickness.

A first attempt at creating a nixie-tube inspired display. This one consists of ten slices of 2mm extruded acrylic, lit up by LEDs from below. The challenge I’m currently facing is to space the light channeling bits at the bottom of each slice to be able to add WS2812-controlled LEDs below the display. More…
